Werner Bischof

Werner Bischof (1916-1954) was the first photographer invited to join Magnum alongside its founding members, in 1949. Born in Switzerland, he studied photography in his native Zurich at the School for Arts and Crafts. Making experimental forays across different genres of photography, he was an accomplished and skilled artist, equally at home photographing on location during his numerous travels or indeed in his own studio. In 1942, he became a freelancer for Du magazine, which published his first major photo essays in 1943. Bischof gained international recognition after the publication of his 1945 reportage on the devastation caused by the Second World War. He was killed in a car accident in the Andes in 1954.
