Micha Bar-Am

Micha Bar-Am (b. 1930) was born in Berlin and moved with his family to Israel, then the British mandate of Palestine, in 1936. He lived on a kibbutz as a young man and began to document kibbutz life with borrowed cameras. Bar-Am was drafted when the Jewish-Arab conflict turned to war. He began to photograph seriously by covering the 1956 Sinai War then in 1966 the Six-Day War, where he met Cornell Capa, which lead to the establishment of the International Center for Photography in 1974. Micha Bar-Am’s Israel: Insight (2011) is a voice tied to the history and visual depiction of modern Israel and its neighbors.
