Ian Berry

Ian Berry (b.1934) is an English photographer who made his reputation after moving to South Africa at 18. As the only photographer to document the Sharpeville Massacre in 1960, his photographs were used in the trial that proved the victim's' innocence. Cartier-Bresson invited him to join Magnum two years later. Since, Berry has documented events including Russia's invasion of Czechoslovakia, famine in Ethiopia, and Apartheid in South Africa. His body of South African work is represented in Black and Whites: L'Afrique du Sud (1988) and Living Apart (1996).
