Harry Gruyaert

Harry Gruyaert (b. 1941), born in Antwerp, Belgium, studied at the School of Film and Photography in Brussels from 1959 to 1962. He became a photographer in Paris, while working as a freelance director of photography for Flemish television between 1963 and 1967. He “became interested in making a portrait of England by photographing the TV screen”. While living in London between 1970 to 1972, he used this technique to photograph the Munich Olympics and the first Apollo flights, on a broken TV screen. Between 1973 and 1980, he began photographing what would become a long essay on Belgium.
