Elliott Erwitt

Born in Paris to Russian parents, Elliott Erwitt (b. 1928) spent his childhood in Milan, then emigrated to the US, via France, with his family in 1939. In 1948 he moved to New York and exchanged janitorial work for film classes at the New School for Social Research. In 1951 he was drafted for military service and undertook various photographic duties while serving in a unit of the Army Signal Corps in Germany and France. Erwitt is known for his benevolent irony and humanistic sensibility. Among his books, include: Son of a Bitch (1974), Between the Sexes (1994), Museum Watching (1999), Elliott Erwitt Snaps (2001), Unseen (2007), New York (2008), Elliott Erwitt’s Rome (2009), Sequentially Yours (2011), Dogs (2012), Regarding Women (2014), and Personal Best (2014).
