A Black Mountain wild pony feeds in the Brecon Beacons, in the surreal landscape of contrasting black and white. The wild pony appears as a ghostly and magical figure in a gray landscape while minute figures and young tourists brave the rain and wind in the background. From the photo book Wales: Land of My Father, a project exploring David Hurn’s native culture, this picture reflects the photographer’s style and creativity. “I find it unnecessary to create new realities. There is more pleasure, for me, in things as-they-are”, says the Welsh photographer.

David Hurn has a longstanding international reputation as one of Britain's most influential reportage photographers, with a hugely diverse range, from the 1956 Hungarian revolution to a long standing collaboration with the Beatles throughout the Sixties. Having begun his career as a freelance photographer, he became a full Magnum Member in 1967. He is the founder of the illustrious School of Documentary Photography in Newport.
