A train travels through the mountainous landscape of south western France, between La Tour de Carol and Foix: from The Train Journey Through Europe, this image represents a furtively captured but majestic landscape in movement. While the roadside is blurred, transformed into abstract forms, the train is depicted with clarity. The landscape flows and spreads across the photographic frame. The train appears as the visual pivot.

Erich Hartmann was 16 years old when he emigrated to New York with his family, as a refugee from Nazi Germany. His poetic approach to science, industry and architecture led him to publish photo essays Shapes of Sound, The Building of Saint Lawrence Seaway and The Deep North. Invited to join Magnum in 1952, he was for many years on the board of directors, becoming President in 1985.
