In Chihuahua, birds fly over the Cuauhtemoc Colonies in Mexico. Captured mid-movement flying over Mennonite farmlands, this photograph is reminiscent of the community’s own impulses towards freedom. From Larry Towell’s photobook documenting The Mennonites, a Protestant religious sect who continually migrate around the world to maintain the freedom to live as they choose. Rather than compromise their way of life, this community keeps the modern world at bay through discipline, harshness and poverty.

Canadian photographer Larry Towell shaped his personal style through poetry and folk music. Interested in the themes of dispossession and exile, he published a magazine essay titled Paradise Lost, reporting on the ecological consequences of the catastrophic Exxon Valdez oil spill in Alaska. He became a Magnum Nominee in 1988, and a full member in 1993.
