A memorial to a dead Russian soldier near the town of Andi, on the Chechen border of the Republic of Daghestan. The brutalist structure contrasts with the organic shapes of majestic hills in the background, metallic gray tones against the landscape’s gradations of green. The red star reaches high in the sky, a symbol evocative of Soviet power.

Among numerous photography journeys across the world, German photographer Thomas Dworzak documented the conflicts in Chechnya, Karabakh and Abkhazia. His book Kavkaz aimed to report on the impact of years of brutal war in the Caucasian region, as well as the interplay between Russia and the Caucasus in their respective visual cultures. Thomas Dworzak became a Magnum Nominee in 2000 and a Member in 2004.
