Man in street under the Brooklyn Bridge. New York, 1955.

Joining Magnum in 1952, Erich Hartmann shared the Eastern European heritage of many of the agency's early photographers, having moved to New York in 1938 as a refugee. The limelight cafe in Greenwich village was the only photography gallery in New York at this time, since Alfred Stieglitz's '291' a half century earlier.
