Eve Arnold became a member of Magnum Photos in 1954 on the strength of the work she shot on Harlem fashion under the tutelage of Alexey Brodovitch, former art director of Harpers Bazaar. She was one of the earliest female members of Magnum, joining at the same time as Inge Morath. While based in the US, she produced social documentary and punchy political reportage, alongside portraiture of some of Holywood's biggest names. For her, portraiture was always a collaboration. Her iconic photograph of Malcolm X depicts a man assured of the power of his image.
