Fidel Castro delivering an hours-long speech. He had arrived in Santa Clara following its liberation by forces lead by Ernesto Che Guevara. Santa Clara, Cuba, 1959.

This photo was taken during the first days of January 1959 when Cuban Dictator Fulgancio Batista was ousted and escaped to the Dominican Republic and Cuban rebel leader Fidel Castro marched with his Revolutionary Army of 8500 partisan men and women from the mountains toward Havana. His movement was called "The 26th July Movement," the date of the first Cuban insurection of 1933. Castro and his men liberated Havana, in order to appoint Dr Manuel Urrutia as President designate.

Glinn was one of few photographers granted access to Fidel Castro’s inner circle, having sped from a New Year's party on December 31, 1958 to Havana upon hearing that dictator Fulgencio Batista had fled; his images are indispensable to understanding this momentous time in Cuba’s history.

Burt Glinn became an associate member of Magnum in 1951, along with Eve Arnold and Dennis Stock – the first Americans to join the young photo agency – and a full member in 1954.
