Cormorant fishing on the Li River in Guilin: in this nocturnal and peaceful landscape, anonymous figures in the foreground are reminiscent of the mountainous silhouettes in the background. Small lanterns light up the swirling water. From the photo book China, this image witnesses an ancestral tradition, a collaboration between men and birds.

Photographer Hiroji Kubota met René Burri, Burt Glinn and Elliott Erwitt in Japan. Between 1979 and 1984, he embarked on a 1,000-day tour of China, during which he made more than 200,000 photographs. His awards include the Nendo Sho (Annual Award) of the Japanese Photographic Society and the Mainichi Art Prize.
