An oil fire in Kuwait offers an apocalyptic vision of the aftermath of the war: the land goes up in flames, and clouds of dense smoke billow into the sky, while three camels wander into the field, perilously close. From the feature The Persian Gulf: After the storm. 1991, this photograph symbolizes the dramatic and devastating effects of the Gulf War on the environment and local wildlife.

Acclaimed for his celebrated image of the Afghan Girl, Steve McCurry has been one of the most iconic voices in contemporary photography for more than 30 years. His work has been awarded with the Robert Capa Gold Medal, the National Press Photographers Award, and an unprecedented four First Prize awards from the World Press Photo contest, to name but a few.
