A view over the Bosphorus in Istanbul, the strait connecting the Sea of Marmara to the Black Sea: this photograph is part of Olivia Arthur’s journey along the border between Europe and Asia from her series Middle Distance. Birds flying in the distant sky appear as minute, frozen forms, revealing the transparency of the sky. The space in between the two lands appears both mysterious and hard to locate, rendering abstract the notion of border.

British photographer Olivia Arthur often works on the cultural divide between East and West. Her first publication, titled Jeddah Diary, focused on the lives of women in Saudi Arabia. She has been a Magnum Member since 2012.
