Ferdinando Scianna

Ferdinando Scianna (b. 1943) started taking photographs in the 1960s while studying literature, philosophy, and art history at the University of Palermo. He photographed the Sicilian people which became the book Feste Religiose in Sicilia (1965). Scianna moved to Milan in 1966 and started working for L'Europeo magazine the following year. He also wrote for Le Monde Diplomatique and La Quinzaine Littéraire. He entered the field of fashion photography in the late 1980s. At the end of the decade he published a retrospective, Le Forme del Caos (1989). Scianna explored the meaning of religious rituals in Viaggio a Lourdes (1995), images of sleepers in Dormire Forse Sognare (1997), and his home town in Quelli di Bagheria (2003).
