David Alan Harvey

Though born in San Francisco, David Alan Harvey (b. 1944) was raised in Virginia. Harvey began photographing his family and neighborhood in 1965, with a camera he purchased with savings from his newspaper route. When he was 20 he lived with and documented the lives of a black family in Norfolk, Virginia, resulting in the book, Tell It Like It Is (1966). He was named Magazine Photographer of the Year by the National Press Photographers Association in 1978. He has published two books on his work on the Spanish cultural migration into the Americas, Cuba: Island at a Crossroad (1999) and Divided Soul (2003). He has also published Living Proof (2007) and (based on a true story), published in 2012. Harvey is founder and editor of the award-winning Burn magazine.
