Bruce Gilden

Bruce Gilden (1946) grew up in Brooklyn, which gave him with a keen eye for observing urban behaviors and customs. He studied sociology, but took night classes in photography at the New York School of Visual Arts. His first major project, focused on the intimacy of the bodies on Coney Island, later published in Coney Island (2002). Since, he has photographed the Mardi Gras festival in New Orleans and voodoo places, rites, and beliefs in Haiti, published in his book Haiti (1996). Gilden’s other books include: Facing New York (1992), Go (2000), After the Off (2002), A Beautiful Catastrophe (2005), A Complete Examination of Middlesex (2013), and Foreclosures (2013).
