Description

Steve McCurry first travelled to Cuba in 2010 and has since made multiple trips. He says of this photograph taken in 2010: “I took this photograph of a Soviet-era car on the colorful streets of Havana during my first trip ever to Cuba in 2010. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Old Havana is a time capsule of these wonderful vintage cars, and amazing architecture. There are few places I’ve yet to travel, and Cuba was one of those places until only five years ago. By the time I had started my career in photography in the ’70s, the U.S. and Cuba had already cut all diplomatic ties in 1961. I’m continuously drawn to the energetic scenes and people of Cuba, and I look forward to many more trips to the historic island.”

My life is shaped by the urgent need to wander and observe, and my camera is my passport

Steve McCurry was born in a suburb of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; McCurry studied film at Pennsylvania State University, before going on to work for a local newspaper.

After several years of freelance work, McCurry made his first of what would become many trips to India. Since then, McCurry has gone on to create evocative images in over six continents and countless countries, with scores of magazine and book covers, as well as solo global exhibitions.

His image of a young Afghan refugee with piercing eyes – the June 1985 National Geographic cover – has become one of the most distinctive in photographic history. McCurry has been a contributor to Magnum since 1986.
